The virtue of Daan (giving away or donating) in the Hindu Dharma is that you give without expectation of any return. The prescription of philanthropic ways like volunteering, donations and helping the less privileged is enshrined in the Hindu Dharma. The modern interpretation of Daan may mean donations to charitable organisations, schools and hospitals. The Hindu scriptures contain numerous examples of generous people who help the underprivileged through their Sewa (selfless service) activities.
We have similar aspirations at the CHN and would like you, our members to help. For National Sewa Day 2010, we had over 40 volunteers helping us plant spring bulbs and collect food and toiletries for the homeless (click here for more). Our sailing fundraising effort in 2008 was similarly successful.
Over the coming months, we will be putting together volunteering opportunities for our members in and around London for 2011 and beyond. If you have an idea for volunteering and making your community a better place that you would like CHN to help with, please get in touch via the Contact Us link at the top of this page, addressing your email to Amar Purohit, our Volunteering lead.

CHN charity partner for 2011-12
The CHN has decided to select Child In Need (India) (CINI) as its chosen charity partner for the years 2011-12. CINI helps mothers and children in India break free from the cycle of poverty. It reaches out across all levels of Indian society by going from door to door in the villages and slums as well as talking to locally elected representatives and influencing public policy. Adopting a multi-layered, rights based approach, CINI works towards a sustainable improvement in nutrition, healthcare and education while trying to protect children whose lives are blighted by poverty. You can find out more about CINI here and follow our association with it in the posts in this section of the website below. |
